What is a System on Module and Why Use SoMs

A System on Module (SoM), also know as Computer on Module (CoM), is a hardware platform for embedded computing. System on Module usually includes CPUs, memory, storage, graphics processing units, input and output interfaces, and other core components to function as a complete and single computer. SoMs/CoMs are are designed to streamline the development process of embedded systems, improve production efficiency, and lower design-related risks. It is an ideal choice for building end-products.

DSOM-090M SoM powered by MT7621 chipset integrating an 880MHz MIPS 1004Kc CPU dual-core. It supports the requirements of a high-level AP/router. The RAM can be expanded up to 512MB.

OS: Yocto Linux 5.4.3, Ubuntu 18.04, Android 9; Operating Temperature: -40 °C ~85 °C.

SoM may come with an onboard SoC and is one level higher than an SoC, but not fully functional as a single board computer. The SOM will typically contain peripheral functionality integrated into the microprocessor system on chip (SOC).

Common System on module components include a CPU, RAM, flash memory, a power management unit, wired and wireless communication interfaces.

  • Microcontroller, at least one microprocessor or digital signal processor (DSP) core
  • Memory blocks including a selection of ROM, RAM, EEPROM and/or flash memory
  • Timing sources
  • Industry standard communication interfaces: such as USB, FireWire, Ethernet, USART, SPI, I²C
